5 Hands On Exhibits At The Science Behind Pixar

Part of being a kid mean enjoying cartoons and Disney movies. Heck, who am I kidding, most adults I know watch those too! If you are a Disney fanatic then you will love the new “Science Behind Pixar” exhibit that recently came to The California Science Center.

The Science Behind Pixar is a 13,000 square foot exhibition currently on tour around the US. It was created by the Museum of Science, Boston, in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios.  Guests visiting the center will enjoy a unique look into the Pixar process and explore the science and technology behind some of the most beloved animated films and their characters

With more than 40 interactive exhibit elements, the exhibition’s eight sections each focus on a step in the filmmaking process to give you an unparalleled view of the production pipeline and concepts used at Pixar every day. Participate in fun, engaging hands-on activities, listen to firsthand accounts from members of the studio’s production teams, an even come face-to-face with re-creations of your favorite Pixar film characters, including Buzz Lightyear, Dory, Mike and Sulley, Edna Mode, and WALL•E!

5 Hands On Exhibits At The Science Behind Pixar

    • Rigging Workstation

Kids can select one of three Pixar characters and choose among four arm rigs to determine which will produce the desired motions.

  • Virtual Modeling Workstation

Kids can create a virtual 3D model of a toy person from simple 3D shapes (cube, cone, cylinder, and sphere). Use customized software, to create, rotate, move, and scale your shapes to make a complex virtual 3D model.

  • Surface Appearance Workstation

Edit appearance variables (color/pattern, bump map pattern and height, transparency, and reflectiveness) to design a virtual appearance in Ramone’s garage in CARS.

  • Sets and Cameras Workstation

Here kids will learn how cameras provide our view into the virtual 3D world. They frame each image to convey both where to look and how to feel about a scene.

  • Lighting Workshop

Here, kids can play with lighting effects and see how Nemo and Dory look under different lights. There is also a motivating story about Danielle Feinberg  and how she recalls a programming class in 4th grade where she turned a few lines of code into a picture, like magic. She describes the challenge of trying to make WALL-E stand out against a background of trash.

As a mom of two boys, keeping busy this summer is our number one priority. Fortunately for us the Irvine Spectrum is just a short drive away and it has all of the entertainment, dining and shopping we need. On a recent visit, we had a chance to test out the July Weekday Passes at Dave & Busters. The passes allowed my kids to play unlimited games in July M-F until 6pm for only $50.

Dave & Buster's - July Weekday Pass Card-2

Before I unleashed the kids into a frenzy of screen time, I made sure to fill them up with some delicious food. Dave and Busters has an incredible menu with so many delicious choices. We choce a steak salad, a bacon cheeseburger, an apple walnut salad and a bowl of tortilla soup.

I was extremely impressed at the quality of the food and the menu choices were never ending. It had something for everyone.

Back in the Midway (the arcade area), they have games with blue lights and green lights. Games with the blue lights were unlimited and games with the green lights offer electronic tickets. The Connect4 game below is an example of a green light game.

An example of a blue light game is this virtual roller coaster where you lay back in a seat that is on hydraulics. You watch a screen and it feels as if you are riding the real thing. There must have been 20 different selections to choose from.

Love fair games? No problem, Dave and busters has those too, including several machines of skee ball.

Last month we posted about Knott’s Berry Farm’s Ghost Town’s 75th anniversary as well as the re-opening of Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner restaurant.  Well, this week we visited again and spent some more time at Ghost Town Alive and had some fun new experiences we can’t wait to share!

Gertie’s Dress Shop

Panko Fried Coconut Sticky Rice with Mango Curd and Coconut Sorbet-5

Our first stop at Ghost Town was to ‘ Dress Shop. Gertie’s shop designs the dresses for the beautiful ladies in town. Guests who stop by the shop can create their own design by using a western-style tin template. If Gertie likes your design she might even put your artwork on display for all to see.  My daughter enjoyed coloring several dresses with the help of the nice shop lady.

Visit the Barber shop

Panko Fried Coconut Sticky Rice with Mango Curd and Coconut Sorbet-6

Hear the latest gossip of the day and have a mustache applied, but first you must help the Barber with some fun daily tasks throughout Calico. Percy, Calico’s barber, offers various styles of mustaches which represent characters in the old west: bandit, prospector, lawman, etc. Ghost Town citizens react to the mustaches worn by the guests based on their mustache type. We watched a guest help shave the sheriff at the Barbershop and even got our own personalized mustache.
