Battery Technology 101

battery

Have you ever wondered how Elon Musk has perhaps the most exciting portfolio of businesses on the planet? Musk is a trendsetter when it comes to technological advances and he is no stranger when it comes battery technology (Thank you Tesla). Batteries charge our planet but there are some that are better than others. The most commonly known battery is the lead acid battery but there is also the lithium Ion battery or the Nickel Metal Hydrid.

Lead Acid Vs. Lithium Ion

Cost, Energy/Range and charging are the top 3 differences between the the two battery chemistries. Here is a chart explaining the differences.

Energy Storage: A Comparison of Lead Acid Versus Lithium-Ion Batteries

Hoverboards are one example of gear that use Lithium batteries. SWAGTRON, a hoverboard company with the latest innovations in Light Electric Vehicles & Micro-mobility uses LiFePo™ technology in their boards. LiFePo™ technology is a type of lithium-ion battery using LiFePO. 4 as the cathode material (on a battery this is the positive side), and a graphitic carbon electrode with a metallic backing as the anode.

Did you also know that not all Hoverboards are created equally? SWAGTRON recently introduced three new T580 boards using LifePo technology. These batteries are so much better than lead acid batteries – as those are extremely toxic when not disposed of properly.

The lithium-iron (LiFePo4) battery also has a slight edge over the Li-ion (LiCoO2) battery for safety. This is important because a battery should not get overheated or catch fire in case of overcharging. The lithium-iron battery has superior chemical and thermal stability.

What is The Safest Hoverboard Battery?

Riding Conditions Effect Battery Life

Weight, Bluetooth, Terrain, Slope, acceleration, speed and weather all play a part in the life of batteries. But there are ways to extend hoverboard battery life. The battery is the heart of the hoverboard and these tips can help maintain it correctly:

  1. Do not over-charge your Hoverboard battery.
  2. Do not let the battery die – By charging it timely could save the battery from discharging entirely and will last for a very long time.
  3. Store the batteries in a dry room at a temperature of 0℃-40℃. Too high (more than 50℃) or too low (less than 20℃) temperature will shorten the life of lithium batteries.
  4. Always charge your hoverboard battery with its original charger. Do not use a knock-off brand charger as it can reduce the life span of your battery. The original charger is specially designed for your Hoverboard and tested before the existing factory.
