Butterflies are such majestic animals. It always amazes me how intricate their life cycle is. Each winter monarch butterflies migrate to find eucalyptus trees and Goleta CA has plenty of them. There is even a butterfly grove called the Goleta Butterfly Grove.
Located less than two miles from Bacara Resort & Spa, the grove is one of the largest over wintering locations in California. Adjacent to the Sperling Preserve on the Ellwood Mesa, the space includes 137 acres of natural terrain with designated nature trails that lead to the bluff and beaches of the Gaviota Coast.
In addition to admiring the monarchs while they bask in the sun and float throughout the grove, visitors can hear from Goleta’s on-site docents who provide information on butterfly biology, behaviors and migration. Docents are typically stationed at the Goleta Butterfly Grove on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Bacara Resort & Spa is helping guests make this most of this magical site with its “Bike to the Butterflies” program. Offered every Saturday from now until February 22, the experience includes a guided bike ride from Bacara to the Goleta Butterfly Grove and surrounding bike trails followed by lunch on the bluffs overlooking the Channel Islands. The cost is $100 per person for a two-hour tour.
